Cards release 3rd round pick Buster Davis

August 31st, 2007, 7:00 pm by Mike Tulumello

Ken Whisenhunt said all his players would be evaluated neutrally as he cut his team down to 53 players on Friday. He wasn’t kidding. In an unusual early admission of a mistake, the Cardinals released third-round pick Buster Davis. Davis, a linebacker from Florida State, was listed at 5-foot-9, 242 pounds. But this appeared generous. In any case he wasn’t able to crack the team’s two-deep roster. Whisenhunt had said this was a "big" week for Davis. Before the cuts were announced Whisenhunt hinted that draft status gives players an advantage heading into training camp, but that such stature fades as camp wears on.The Cardinals may try to bring Davis back to the practice squad; the club is on the hook for a signing bonus of about $600,000.Also cut was quarterback Shane Boyd, who played extensively in the pre-season, as the Cardinals decided to go with just two quarterbacks, and wide receiver LeRon McCoy, who caught 18 passes for the team in 2005.In a bit of a surprise, the Cardinals ended up keeping four tight ends: Leonard Pope; rookie free agent Troy Bienemann; Round 7 pick Ben Patrick; and Tim Euhus. They went with five wide receivers instead of six, as had been generally expected.Others released included cornerback Michael Adams, running back Steve Baylark, quarterback Lang Campbell, tackle Brandon Borin, linebacker David Holloway, cornerback Darrell Hunter, guard Brian Johnson, safety Brandon Keeler, defensive tackle Jonathan Lewis, tackle Qasim Mitchell, center Scott Peters, tight end Alex Shor, wide receiver Michael Spurlock, linebacker Pago Togafau, receiver Matt Trannon, tackle Elliot Vallejo, fullback Roshon Vercher and cornerback Justin Wyatt. Before the decisions were announced players on the bubble waited nervously to learn their fate.Lyle Sendlein, an offensive lineman who played at Chaparral High School and then at Texas said,

You gotta wonder about whether the Cardinals can really become a running team..Take a look at the numbers: For the first three games of the exhibition season, the Cardinals

The Cardinals made the big plays. The Chargers made the little plays. LOTS of them. The Cardinals demonstrated their offensive can be explosive in the their exhibition game Saturday night, at home vs. the powerful Chargers. J.J. Arrington returned a kickoff 70 yards to set up a Neil Rackers

Pros and cons of camp

Players are ecstatic that the nearly month-long training camp in Flagstaff is over. The Cards are among about half the NFL teams that still go away to camp. The other half stays at home. Coach Ken Whisenhunt likes the present set-up

Starters to go one half.

The Cardinals starters may play the first half Saturday, at home vs. San Diego, then call it a night.Coach Ken Whisenhunt said his staff hasn’t made a final decision, but this seems to be the way he’s leaning.I’ll be curious to see how the defense does. It seems pretty clear that the offense should be able to move the ball (though I wonder if it will be with the run-first approach Whisenhunt has been talking about). The defense played well at Oakland, not good at all at home vs. Houston. Will this unit be a strength or a liability? ….The tight end spot has been pretty much invisible so far in the pre-season and even at training camp.Sure, part of the reason is the tight ends mostly will concentrate on blocking. But you

Concern about tight ends

August 16th, 2007, 11:48 am by Mike Tulumello

Coach Ken Whisenhunt usually has a sunny outlook on his team. But when somebody asks him about his tight end situation, he speaks in short clipped phrases. The last time he answered a question on the subject he said,
