The Cardinals just announced their undrafted rookie free agents — an amazing 20 all told.No big names, although the Cards did sign a local kid, former Scottsdale Chaparral star Lyle Sendlein (whose brother, Austin, was the Firebirds’ star linebacker when I covered Scottsdale preps). Sendlein played at Texas. His dad, Robin, spent eight seasons in the NFL at linebacker. Also notable: the Cards signed Penn State fullback BranDon Snow. Yes, the same Snow who went off on a Penn State assistant coach in a game this season, leading teammate Levi Brown — the Cards’ top pick — to get in Snow’s face pretty good in a moment captured by ESPN cameras and now immortalized on YouTube. The rest of the list can be found here.

As I survey last season’s stats while I put together a freelance story I was working on, I noticed something interesting.
There has been so much talk about coach Ken Whisenhunt’s desire to run the ball and how, if things go right, the Cardinals want to run it about 500 times or a little more. It’s a hefty amount, and the Cardinals need two backs to pull it off.
But last season, even with an offense that sputtered more often than it should have, the Cards had 999 total plays. If they run it 500 or so times — and assuming the offense is a little more efficient — the Cards are still going to throw the ball at least 450 times. That should be plenty.

The Cardinals have yet to announce their undrafted rookie free agent signings, which hopefully will come later today. Some names have surfaced however.
Massachusetts running back Steve Baylark is a 5-foot-11, 229-pound bowling ball without much speed (he ran a 4.81 40 at his pro day) but he produced on the I-AA level. Might he be the second coming of another UMass star who stuck with the Cards — Marcel Shipp?
East Stroudsburg University receiver Evan Prall played at a tiny D-II school with huge production (76 catches, 1,174 yards, 14 TDs as a senior, 88-1,766-23 in 2005) and can return kicks.
Cornerback Travarous Bain, from Hampton after starting his career at the University of Miami for three seasons, was once a teammate of Antrel Rolle. He runs the 40 in 4.48.
Maryland linebacker David Holloway, 6-2, 229, is more of a hustle player who would have to fit on special teams.
Houston safety Will Gulley, 6-3, 222 pounds, also played a little linebacker.

Cards VP of football operations Rod Graves admitted it was tough with only two picks Sunday in the second part of the draft. The Cards will probably end up with 14 or 15 undrafted rookie free agents in the next day or two, and the mandatory minicamp comes May 12-14.The team got a return man in Steve Breaston to start Day Two, but coach Ken Whisenhunt insisted Breaston can also become a receiver in the league. Breaston will have to prove that. The final choice, tight end Ben Patrick, is a receiver first. Whisenhunt said Patrick has work to do to learn how to block — which is tough given the Cards’ desperate need for a good blocking tight end — but the Cards had been wishing and hoping he slid to the seventh round. The team would have given Patrick serious consideration in the sixth round, if the Cards had had a pick.

The Cardinals took Deleware tight end Ben Patrick with their final pick of the draft. Some thought he was an early second-day pick. Myself and XTRA radio’s Mike Jurecki sat here at the team complex for the last two or three hours calling Patrick’s name for the Cards’ last choice — mostly because he was the top player available on the Scouts Inc. board pretty much since the day started. His ears had to have burning by the time the Cards picked. As a seventh rounder, no one is expecting an all-pro. But he is a smart guy who got a degree at Duke before pulling a Kevin Kruger and transferring to Deleware for his final year of athletic eligibility. Now the Cards are working the phones getting ready to nab the undrafted rookies. Rod Graves and Ken Whisenhunt should come down soon, and I’ll have one more update.

Cardinals first-round pick Levi Brown just had his press conference prior to heading out to the Diamondbacks game with Cards media relations manager Chris Melvin to throw out the first pitch.Ironically, Brown said he wanted to play baseball as a ninth-grader but he was basically pushed into football by his friends, who chided him for being a "punk" for not trying football. I think it worked out for him.Initial thoughts about Brown: A good person, good natured. Will be a good addition to the locker room. Smart (proven by his two degrees) and that hopefully will translate to the NFL field. Knows some people have criticized him for not being nasty enough, but he isn’t fazed (and seems to believe he will prove naysayers wrong. He can get in a teammate’s face if they are out of line.)One last thing. He will be wearing No. 75, which just happens to be the jersey number just vacated by the departed Leonard Davis. It may be coincidence (Brown’s No. 67 from college is worn by guard Milford Brown, so Levi was going to have to get something different) but it’ll serve as a message too: This offensive line is officially changed.

The Cardinals spent their fifth-round pick on Michigan wide receiver Steve Breaston, a choice that is all about special teams. Breaston is good in both kickoff and punt returns, and after last year — when the Cardinals missed on their chance to draft Devin Hester — the team was looking for a return guy.Solid choice. He is raw as a wideout but the Cards could use a developing guy as Bryant Johnson heads into the final year of his contract in 2007. He should be the punt returner and he’ll have a good shot at displacing J.J. Arrington as the kickoff returner. His return numbers dropped off last year for the Wolverines, but "teams prepared a lot different for me," he said as coaches realized the threat he had become.

Unbelievable. Randy Moss, the anti-Patriot if there ever was one, is apparently heading to New England. The price would be a fourth-round pick, and if Bill Belchick and his veterans can get Moss in line, the Pats — who have had a heck of an offseason — could be very scary in 2007.The Patriots will be far and away the favorite to represent the AFC in Glendale come early February, 2008.

Just got off the conference call with third-round pick Buster Davis, the Florida State linebacker. Can’t say he lacks for confidence. He talked about his strengths and then added, good naturedly but seriously, "I don’t have a weakness."His lack of height, being a shade under 5-10, doesn’t sound like his favorite subject, but he sounds like he understands it."I am a complete player," Davis said near the end of the call, before catching himself. "A shorter version of a complete player."

The Cards grabbed inside linebacker Buster Davis out of Florida State with their last pick. He’s very short — a tad over 5-foot-9 — and that’s the main reason he fell as far as he did. A few places compare him to NFL veteran London Fletcher, which isn’t bad. Not a bad pick. The chip on his shoulder for being a little guy will probably serve him well. The Cards are probably done for the day. Coach Ken Whisenhunt and Rod Graves will come down in a little bit to wrap up the day’s events.
